Terms of sale

These terms are between you and [Legal entity name], trading as Dead Certs, Bournemouth, Dorset.

01What you're buying

A genuine certified copy of a death register entry, ordered on your behalf and, if you choose, framed. We don't produce, alter or reproduce certificates. A certified copy is a record of a registration and can't be used as proof of identity.

02Where your certificate comes from

We order a genuine certified copy of the death register entry from the official register for where the death was registered: the General Register Office for England and Wales, National Records of Scotland, or the General Register Office for Northern Ireland. Anyone can order a certified copy. We do the searching, ordering, framing and delivery.

03What it costs us and how long it takes

General Register Office (England and Wales)£12.50 / £38.50 priorityAbout 4 working days with an index reference, or about 15 without (plus £3.50)
Local register office£12.50 / £38.50 priorityVaries by office
National Records of Scotland£12 to £15 / £27 priorityUsually within 8 working days
General Register Office for Northern Ireland£15About 5 working days
Bespoke A3 conservation frame£80 to £1207 to 10 working days
Photo candle£12 to £203 to 6 working days

A death in England and Wales is normally registered within five days of the paperwork reaching the register office. If a coroner opens an inquest, the death can't be registered until the inquest ends, which can take months. Pre-orders wait for registration, not the news.

04Prices

Prices include the official certificate fee, our search, framing where chosen, packaging and UK delivery.

05Cancelling an order

You can cancel within 14 days of ordering for a full refund, as long as we haven't already applied for the certificate. Once we've applied, the certificate is ordered in your name for you, so we can refund everything except the government fee and any framing already started.

06Pre-orders

A pre-order reservation costs £25. It is fully refundable if you cancel at any time before we order the certificate.

When the death is registered, we'll email you to confirm your package and take the balance. If we can't reach you within 30 days, we'll refund your £25.

The balance is charged at the price on our website when we order, not the price when you reserved, because government and framing costs change over time. If you don't want to go ahead at the new price, we'll refund your £25.

If Dead Certs ever stops trading, we'll refund all open reservations.

07Delays

Certificates can only be ordered once a death is registered, and the timings in "What it costs us and how long it takes" are the register's, not ours. If registration is held up, for example by an inquest, we wait with you. We can't speed it up and won't charge you more for it.

08The last round

If you choose to record a podcast episode, nothing is published until you've approved the edit. You can withdraw consent before it goes out.

The bottle is only served to people aged 18 or over. We bring a non-alcoholic alternative on request.

09Photo candles

You confirm that you took any photo you send us, own the rights to it, or that it's in the public domain. We'll refuse photos that look like press, promotional or stock images. Personalised candles are made to order, so once we've started printing we can't take a cancellation, but faulty or damaged candles are always replaced or refunded.
